Introduction

Katharina Reiss in her“Author's Foreword”of her Translation Criticism:The Potentials and Limitations(2004: xi)says that“[t]he sheer bulk and undeniable significance of translations in today's world require that the quality of translations be a matter of special attention”.Study of translation criticism has both theoretical and practical significance as “[u]ndeniably many poor translations have been made and even published” while “[t]he standards most often observed by critics are generally arbitrary”(ibid).More than fifty years ago,Reiss thought “a careful study of the potential and limitations of translation criticism” necessary “because the present state of the art is inadequate”(ibid).
