Diversity of IIoT endpoints

An industrial IoT deployment includes a wide spectrum of endpoints that need to be uniquely identified and authenticated. The spectrum includes low-footprint, often battery-powered field devices such as connected sensors, oil pumps, and actuators, usually placed in remote locations. These devices interface with the physical environment and are susceptible to physical access and tampering. On the higher end of the spectrum are servers and gateways, which have high memory and processing capacities and are usually located in physically secured data center facilities.
